The familiar scent of damp earth and decaying leaves hit David as he neared the property. It was a scent that once brought comfort, a reminder of endless summers spent exploring the woods behind the house. Now, it just made him ache. He hadn't been back in years. He’d told himself it was easier this way. Now, here he was, watching a bulldozer claw at the porch swing. He sank onto a nearby stone wall, his shoulders slumped.
